How Did Creed Help a Norweigan Boy Escape a Wolf Attack?

A 13-year-old Norwegian schoolboy came across four wolves while coming home from the bus stop this week. In the end, it’s possible that his love of Creed’s heavy metal music saved his life. How did he escape from a horrible wolf attack?

In 2011, a 13-year-old Norwegian kid came home alone from school when he came across a pack of wolves. He was able to ward them off by taking off his headphones and blaring Creed’s “Overcome” at maximum throttle.

How Did the Boy Happen to Encounter Wolves?

As he traveled home from school in the southern Norwegian town of Rakkestad, Walter Eikrem listened to music on his phone, as he regularly does. The journey from where he boards the school bus to his family’s home runs down a gently sloping hillside. He noticed something gray on the slope all of a sudden. He subsequently told TV2, Norway’s main commercial station, that I thought it may have been the neighbor’s dogs at first. But what he came upon were actually four wolves.

Walter told the Norwegian tabloid VG about the encounter and how he thought the wolves were about to attack him. But he kept his terror hidden. Walter took the earbuds out of his phone, turned the volume up, and blasted heavy metal music through its little speakers, remembering his parents’ warning. He shouted as loudly as he could while waving his arms around violently to scare away the herd of wild creatures.

The worst thing you can do is run away because doing so just invites the wolves to chase you down. But I was so afraid that I couldn’t even run away if I’d wanted to.

Trying to Escape The Pack of Wolves

The strategy worked. Eikrem claimed that playing Creed’s Overcome was enough to scare the wolves away.

They weren’t afraid at all. They just galloped away after turning around.

Walter’s encounter with the wolves was covered by the local daily Rakkestad Avis, which also offered his mother the opportunity to share her side of the tale. She claimed she had meant to pick up her kid from school but had been delayed while shopping in Rakkestad and missed the bus.

I have a fully dreadful conscience. Since I knew there were wolves in the vicinity, and we saw three wolves on the edge of the forest while we were putting our horses in their stall the previous evening, and the horses were panicked.

Nonetheless, she had made it clear to her children how they should act if they came across any wolves. She would warn them.

Just don’t run away. You can even persuade a small poodle to chase you down if you run away, even if it doesn’t want to harm you; the same is true for wolves.

In the end, it appears that the son’s recall of her self-defense advice and a little heavy metal saved the day. (Source: Spiegel)
