Flight of the Navigator star was homeless and on drugs – then robbed bank to save his life

In 1986 Flight of the Navigator star Joey Cramer took a break from acting “to be a normal kid again”.

Fast forward 34 years, that hiatus is only just ending – but life has been anything but ordinary.

Homeless, suicidal and hopelessly hooked on hard drugs, in 2016, wearing a flimsy disguise, he robbed a bank, fleeing with a wad of cash. He was arrested three days later.

It was his way of forcing himself to get help.

Now, after getting clean in prison, the 47-year-old is finally relaunching the acting career he put on ice three decades ago.

And by sharing his story in documentary Life After the Navigator, he’s hoping to help others facing similar issues.

Wow, sad tale. Loved that movie.

Just gotta say, this movie has one of the most badass [openings](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pnMcJYoJgy4) of any movie i’ve seen. Dirty synth rock over a Frisbee Dog championship montage. It has nearly nothing to do with this article or even the rest of the movie…but you should probably check it out.

There is a documentary called “[Life after The Navigator](https://youtu.be/GzyKdKmBV4E)”

The majority of the doc is about his life after the movie and goes extensively into his drug use, that incident, and getting clean (along with a cast reunion).

There are also some good “Flight of the Navigator” behind the scenes tidbits in there as well.

This guy is a family friend!

He came over to visit my grandma and we all watched the movie together, and he talked about all the behind the scenes stuff and fun he had while making the movie. Super nice guy.

Navigator, I don’t leak. You leak, remember?

That movie taught me everything I knew about Florida before the age of 12.

That was my favorite movie for a LONG time. The acting was kind of corny, but the overall story was better than Star Wars.

Flight of the Navigator, D.A.R.Y.L, The Last Starfighter, Space Balls…..man the 1980s had some great space movies.
