(Phys.org) —Forscher des Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) haben ihre Ergebnisse auf der diesjährigen Goldschmidt‑Konferenz vorgestellt. Sie berichten, dass sie Bakterien, Pilze und Viren gefunden haben, die eineinhalb Meilen unter dem Meeresboden leben — solche Proben, so berichten sie, seien Millionen Jahre alt und würden sich nur alle 10.000 Jahre reproduzieren.

The IODP is an international effort with participants from 22 countries. Its goal is to study the history of the ocean basins, which it does by drilling (from the scientific drill ship JOIDES) deep into the ocean floor and retrieving samples of what is found.
