Why Did Susan Sarandon Need To Learn to Play the Cello?

The Witches of Eastwick is a 1987 American dark fantasy-comedy film directed by George Miller that stars Jack Nicholson as Daryl Van Horne, Cher, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Susan Sarandon as the titular witches. Did you know why Susan Sarandon needed to play cello for the movie?

Susan Sarandon, who plays a cellist named Jane in “The Witches of Eastwick,” found out only after she was cast that she would have to learn how to play cello quickly and that she would be sued if she left the production.

Did Cher Steal Susan Sarandon’s Role in the Movie The Witches of Eastwick?

Susan Sarandon revealed that Cher stole Sarandon’s role in their classic film The Witches of Eastwick after Cher liaised with producer Jon Peters.

In the 1987 film, Sarandon played dowdy teacher Jane, and Jack Nicholson played the devil. Sarandon, however, revealed by screenwriter Michael Cristofer that she was initially hired to play Cher’s role as sexy sculptress Alex.

I initially was cast in Cher’s part and didn’t find out till I got to LA — because I was living in Rome — that I was actually moved to a different part, I had to learn suddenly to play the cello, and I had never played an instrument in my life. They said they would sue me if I left, so I didn’t have much choice!

On the other hand, the actresses got along so well that Cher lent her a wig and dress for a scene in which Nicholson seduces her. They also had lunch with Nicholson every day in his trailer.

Sarandon and Cristofer spoke ahead of a fundraiser for Project Angel Food in Los Angeles, which will host a Witches of Eastwick home brewing party on Saturday, hosted by Sandra Lee.

Sarandon stated that she, Cher, and co-star Michelle Pfeiffer bonded to get through the shoot, during which Peters threw chairs on the set and director George Miller quit twice.

There were a lot of reasons why we could not have gotten along, and everybody took a higher road.

Susan Sarandon’s Love Life

Following her long-term relationships with Tim Robbins and Jonathan Bricklin, the Stepmom star says she’s forever hopeful that she’ll find love again.

In terms of a romantic relationship, I don’t know. That window may have closed, but I’m forever hopeful — but not desperate.

Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic has made meeting new people, romantic or otherwise, far more difficult, even for Hollywood celebrities.

I’d like to have a travel companion, male or female — age doesn’t matter. But I’d like to find someone who has an up-for-an-adventure attitude. Also, who is passionate about something and loves what they do, whatever that is? I guess my point is that I’m pretty open, but I don’t know,” the Oscar winner added. “COVID isn’t exactly the best place to meet people for dating. So, I’m not sure, but I’m pretty content making memories with my kids.
