Doctor here: To clarify, having the erection isn’t something that is necessary for continued penile health – i.e. it does not confer health advantages – but ABSENCE of nocturnal tumescence (“morning wood”) can indicate a medical cause for erectile dysfunction (i.e. vascular disease for hyperlipidemia, uncontrolled diabetes, smoking, etc.) vs. a purely psychological cause (which is more common in younger men – i.e. ‘performance anxiety’).

Fun fact: There’s a really old-fashioned, jokey saying in Japanese (nobody says it ever but I found it in a dictionary once) that goes 朝マラの立たぬ男に金貸すな – don’t lend money to a man who doesn’t have an erection in the morning. Implication is that judging by the lack of morning wood he might die soon so he can’t pay you back

    I’ve never had that issue.

    Guess I’m dying or whatever…

My wood hurts some mornings like I’ve been on Viagra for 8 hours.

This was true for me lol i was withdrawaling from alcohol pretty bad. Like if I wasn’t actively drunk I was DTing and I knew it was getting bad bc for a couple months I wasn’t getting morning wood.

But after rehab and all that jazz it’s all back to normal. Some mornings it’s like I have no blanket at all.

It helps in keeping your pecker in full working order as well. As someone who is suppressing testosterone and has lost all involuntary erections, if I don’t make myself get one a couple times a week, it can get painful to get one at all.
