What Other Grains Can Be Popped Besides Popcorn?

Popcorn- a staple snack that everyone would want to get their hands on every time they go out to the theaters or maybe even when watching a movie at home, but- have you ever wondered if there are any other snacks out there that undergo the same process that popcorns do which is, of course, popping?

There are actually several grains that can pop aside from corn kernels. Some included in the list are Amaranth, Quinoa, Sorghum, and Wild Rice, and the best thing about all these alternatives is that they do not have pesky husks.

What Makes Them Pop?

The reason why popcorn has  Pops is because of the water trapped inside of its kernel.  When heated, the water transforms into steam, and because the shell of the kernel is tough, there is no way for the steam to escape. This causes a buildup of pressure inside. When the pressure gets high enough, approximately 355 degrees Fahrenheit the kernel will burst, revealing its beautiful white puff.  And just like that, you have yourself a delicious snack to munch on while watching your movies! When people hear about popped snacks, all they think about is popcorn. But have you ever heard of popped Amaranth, Quinoa, Sorghum, or even popped Wild Rice?  Let’s talk about the details.

Popped Quinoa

Everyone who has ever tried popped Quinoas would agree that even if popped, Quinoas may not be the best alternative when it comes to replacing or challenging popcorn- it certainly has its advantages at being one of the best standalone snacks available. These can easily be paired up with yogurt. Its crispy texture adds the perfect crunch to your meal.  Guess what? Quinoa pops are also guilt-free!

Popped Amaranth

Although Amaranths are smaller, it is undoubtedly one of the most versatile out of the popped snacks. Unlike the usual noisy and fun crunch we get from popcorn, popped Amaranths offer a much more delicate and a slightly more appealing crunch that it can be appreciated on its own., It also has the ability to enhance the right dishes it is incorporated into.

Popped Sorghum

Sorghum is the best alternative to popcorn as it literally tastes and looks the same. They are, however, small in size.  The size of it makes it fit to be used as a  garnish on multiple dishes.

Popped Wild Rice

Popped Wild Rice is a bit different. Instead of popping, it puffs. But it is basically the same thing. Popped Wild Rice offers a distinct nutty flavor complemented with an impressive crunch. It is delicious, especially when added to creamy soups and even salads!
