オシップ・サモイロヴィチ・バーンスタインはウクライナ生まれのチェスプレイヤーで、最も印象的な形でマスターとなった。1882年に裕福なユダヤ人家庭に生まれた。19歳のときにチェスを始め、同時に弁護士になるための学問をしていた。1902年7月、著名なピルスバリーと盲目エキシビションマッチを行った。ピルスバリーがその対局に勝ったが、これはバーンスタインの人生で最も重要な対局の一つになるとはまだ言えなかった。
