Who Showed Up to Accept Their Razzies?

The Razzies was created as a parody of the Academy Awards, and not all celebrities would make time to attend. But some A-listers do show up all in the name of fun and accept their Razzies personally. Let’s find out which Hollywood bigwigs attended.

Sandra Bullock personally accepted her Golden Raspberry Award. She received the Academy Award for Best Actress the next night for her role in The Blind Side. Another notable A-lister is Halle Berry.

What is The Razzies?

The Razzies is a term coined for The Golden Raspberry Awards. The Razzies is the exact opposite of the famed Academy Awards, popularly known as the Oscars.

The Razzies serve as a sarcastic and satirical counterpoint to the Oscars, shining a light on the worst of the worst. It was for the films that, despite their great intentions, ended up being a waste of time and money.

Copywriter and Publicist John Wilson created the Razzies in the summer of 1980. Wilson had recently graduated from UCLA’s film school and got a position at a movie trailer studio, where he assisted with the media campaigns for numerous films. Wilson was required to see approximately 250 competing films because the corporation sponsored a film festival.

Wilson created the Razzies after attempting to host an Oscars party. The Oscars start at five o’clock and end around nine o’clock, and with several people there, it isn’t easy to keep the crowd entertained. Wilson set up an improvised podium out of cardboard and asked the group to nominate the worst films of the year.

The initial Razzie statues were made of foam. The inaugural Worst Picture award went to Allan Carr’s Can’t Stop the Music, a musical comedy that fictionalized the Village People’s story. Wilson saw a double-feature of Can’t Stop the Music and Xanadu and found it so bad he requested his money back. (Source: Time)

The Razzies are now a year-round event, with a website that receives over a million visitors each year with recommendations for the worst films of the year and the worst movies of the week in cinemas and on DVD.

The year-end honors are now decided by nearly 700 voters, who include journalists, industry insiders, and frequent moviegoers. Encore on Demand Movie Channel has organized a month-long tribute to previous Razzie winners to coincide with this year’s awards event.

The Razzies mimic the Oscars, showing 24 hours right before the Oscars do. Some of the awards given in the Razzie Awards are:

  • Worst Picture
  • Worst Actor
  • Worst Actress
  • Worst Supporting Actor
  • Worst Supporting Actress
  • Worst Director
  • Worst Screenplay
